Re: how much set to cut a log in the water?

The saws we used at Congaree NP to cut in the swamp were initially set at 12 thou. We saw a lot of bind in the cuts so I widened the set to 20 for a crescent ground saw and 25 for flat saws. Didn't seem to have any more problems.

Re: Simonds 325 details

Nothing much to add, except nice saw and welcome to the forum! The 325 is probably the two-person saw I see the most around me (NC). Makes a great trail saw.

Shop Security

This weekend my filing shed was broken into. It's a little ways from the house and the property is pretty accessible from the back so we didn't hear anything in the night. The door was locked and padlocked but they managed to pry a window off and crawl through. Fortunately, no saws or any of the har...

That looks like a pretty beefy piece of steel riding on the teeth. Does that bend into an arc?

Re: Lets talk about set

In trim carpentry and furniture making, there is going to be a show side and hidden side to just about every piece of wood you cut. As long as a western saw exits a piece of moulding on the wall side, cut quality off the saw is not a deal breaker. As long as your saws track straight, which is a func...

Re: Lets talk about set

The amount of set you actually need in a taper ground carpentry saw is pretty minimal. More often than not, old saws you start working on will have too much. Wenzloff recommends clamping the teeth of a saw in a vice with paper shims between the saw and the metal of the vice on both sides, the severa...

Alternately, you could go the same route as Mr. Starling. Setting starts at about 3:40.

Re: Setting anvils

I've purchased a set of auto body dollies to try out as anvils. At first inspection, the shapes are promising but at 2 lbs. apiece they might be a little on the light side. Here's a picture of the from the interweb. http://img0124.psstatic.com/182644682_7pc-fiberglass-auto-body-repair-tools-fender-t...
