casting Spiders?

If you were going to get a casting expert to help you cast Spiders e.g. at Bodgers Ball in May 2018 at Weald and Downland Museum in Sussex - what metals are appropriate? I think historically they were from iron or steel. That has far higher melting point than other metals. Would it matter if we cast...

Jim,
If not taper-ground, what max thickness would you suggest?

What gauge steel...?

I research getting punches and dies made for possible saw-fabrication at events like Bodgers Ball.
What gauge steel would be the maximum you'd suggest for a sawplate?

what data for saws for selling on?

For those who sell on saws they have filed, I want to know what data they capture and how they record it. I am about to sell refurbished saws here in UK and don't want to re-invent any wheels. So if any one has spreadsheets or forms or any sort of checklists to capture data about saws they buy then ...

Dolly Chapman Training

How was Dolly as a teacher? Excellent. I I've seen a youtube vid of her and she seems very pleasant. Dayle, 'pleasant' does not cover it. She is stunning effective at conveying information. She does that graciously, making no-body wrong but also allowing no-one to grab the group's attention. I'd si...

Re: tooth-pitch matched to log-diameter?

... For example modern racing saws have quite large gullets but the cutter teeth have a pitch of about 4 teeth per inch. Jim shows a picture of modern racing saw above. Can anyone ( perhaps Jim?) provide a photo of such a racing saw with a ruler along hopefully 12 inches of the tooth-line so I can ...

How to best describe pitch of gullet/cutter/raker ?

Because I may get more saw-plates made ready for filing by me and others, I want to understand how to better think about merits of any design. My best suggestion so far is to focus on two numbers: 1. points-per-foot 2. variation from the mean point-to-point distance For the images below: a) which nu...

Re: tooth-pitch matched to log-diameter?

PATCSawyer,
Thanks for Corona picture above.

Will you please post picture of this saw with at least 12 inches of ruler in view, with ruler-end touching one cutter? I can then work out the pitch of rakers, gullets & cutters.

tooth-pitch matched to log-diameter?

Is there any formula to relate tooth-pitch to log-diameter? Or some experience you folks can share? I will be giving talks soon to various groups. I want to suggest appropriate saws to select. Assume that most UK bucking will be for diameters less than 12 inches, what tooth per inch is appropriate? ...
