saws losing set

Post by Aguineapig » February 16th, 2018, 7:48 am

A friend of mine has taken to using a crosscut saw to cut firewood. He has been noticing consistent loss of set on his saws which presumably were hammer set (I can see marks on the teeth where the setting hammer struck). I checked his saws and most of the teeth were down from 16 thousandths set to around 9 thousandths. This has happened to two of his saws.

He cuts a lot of wood. approx 4 cords of birch and maple and aspen. My best guess was that some of the teeth were wrest set, and were springing back. But I don't have much experience with using saws for large large volumes of wood. So I wanted to throw this out there-- what would be the likeliest diagnoses?
